Empowering workers to better their workplaces.
Need a Union?
Unions don’t just benefit union members; they raise the bar for everyone. When healthcare professionals organize, we create standards that improve recruitment, retention, and respect across the entire industry. Better pay, safer staffing, stronger protections, and a real voice on the job. These are the results of collective power. Every worker deserves that much.
By standing together with your co-workers, you can form an employee organization that gives you a real say in your workplace. A union helps balance the power between you and your employer, ensures fair compensation, and protects your right to a safe and healthy work environment.
You have the legal right to form a union.
Despite what some employers may claim or the roadblocks they might throw in your way, thousands of workers organize successful unions every year and win.
HNA OPEIU Local 50 is here to help. We’ve built strong unions across hospitals and clinics throughout Hawai‘i, representing but not limited to nurses, respiratory therapists, radiation technologists, and clinical documentation specialists. With the backing of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), we provide the support, resources, and experience needed to organize effectively and create lasting change.
Stronger together.
When you organize, you’re not just fighting for yourself, you’re helping shape a better healthcare system for everyone.

Raising Workplace Standards, Together.
People form unions because they want to make positive changes in their workplace. A union is a nonprofit employee organization—protected by law—that helps workers speak up in a unified voice for workplace improvements. By forming a union, employees can come together to bargain a legally binding contract that ensures workers are treated fairly and that they have the tools they need to thrive—like a living wage, secure benefits, and a voice at the decision-making table

Join the Movement.
For over a century, the Hawai‘i Nurses’ Association has been the voice, the backbone, and the movement for nurses across our islands. What began in 1917 as the Honolulu Nurses’ Club has grown into a powerful, united force now representing over 4,000 members and growing stronger every year.
In 1918, we aligned with the American Nurses Association, establishing ourselves early on as a leader in elevating the nursing profession in Hawai‘i. By 1960, we boldly stepped into the realm of labor advocacy, forming the Economic and General Welfare Council to protect and empower nurses on the job. That spirit of unity and strength carried forward in 1979 when we created our own Collective Bargaining Organization (HNA/CBO), and again in 2004 when delegates unified under one HNA – solidifying our collective voice.
In 2010, we joined forces with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), becoming HNA, OPEIU Local 50, AFL-CIO, and gaining a national network of solidarity and support.
Today, HNA is a dynamic, member-led union that proudly fights for safe staffing, fair contracts, professional development, and legislative action that centers patient care and nurse well-being. We are nurses, healthcare professionals, organizers, and advocates driven by a shared commitment to protect the integrity of our profession and to uplift each other.

How to Form a Union
People form unions because they want to make positive changes and gain protections in their workplace. Although work settings and issues vary, you can count on these 5 basic steps to create a union where you work. Remember that every step of the way, your right to form a union is protected under US law. Are you ready to get started?

Step 1: Talk to Coworkers and Gather Information
Approach trusted colleagues to talk about what a union might look like in your workplace, and gather information about recurring issues. Local 50 can help provide the resources you’ll need, so reach out to us for guidance throughout the process.

Step 2: Form the Organizing Committee
The organizing committee will educate colleagues about what forming a union means, motivate coworkers to take action with confidence, identify common workplace issues, and help plan how to build a union in your workplace.

Step 3: Build a Majority
It’s time to talk more openly with other coworkers. Work with your organizer to build a plan to win over a super-majority of your coworkers. This is the time to make sure your coworkers have all of their questions answered, because next you’re going to ask them to take action!

Step 4: Make Your Union Official
When you can show a strong majority of support, usually through the signing of “authorization cards” or a petition, the next step is to make your union official. There are a number of ways to do this, and you and your colleagues can decide which method is best for your workplace.

Step 5: Bargain a Strong Contract
It’s time to bargain a strong contract. Your staff union will elect a negotiating team and decide what changes and improvements you want to see. The final agreement will be ratified by union members before it’s put into place. You can count on Local 50 staff to provide support every step of the way.
